SteveC’s story

My sim racing story began humbly with a Logitech G25 wheel base, pedals, and shifter. In those early days, I clamped everything directly to my desk to play classics like LFS and rFactor. Eventually, I needed something more dedicated and transitioned to a foldable, portable NextLevelRacing (NLR) setup. I raced like that for a while, always dreaming of a permanent, stationary rig. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, I finally decided to make that dream a reality. I knew right away that if I was building a dedicated rig, motion was an absolute requirement for maximum immersion.

I had my eye on the NLR Seat Mover and Traction Plus systems for quite a long time. Ultimately, I pulled the trigger on the NLR GT Track steel tube frame, pairing it with the NLR Motion V3 and Traction Plus platform for sway and yaw. Around that same time, I overhauled my hardware, upgrading to a Fanatec ClubSport wheel base, pedals, and shifter. This combination was a massive leap forward from my old desk-mounted G25. I absolutely loved that setup and pushed it to its limits for many years before making the leap to where I am today.

Any advice for other sim racers?

My biggest piece of advice is to clearly define what you want out of a motion system first, and then build a realistic budget to achieve that goal. Ask yourself the core questions: Do you need 3DOF, 4DOF, or a full 6DOF experience? Are you primarily driving, flying, or building a hybrid rig that does both? Your answers to these questions will heavily dictate the right Qubic ecosystem for your needs.

Furthermore, you cannot overlook space planning, especially if you are eyeing a massive footprint like the QS-S25. I knew I wouldn’t settle for anything less than 6DOF, but I was working with a relatively constrained room size. Meticulous planning was the key to my success; I actually used scale CAD drawings to guarantee the QS-S25 would fit perfectly before making the purchase.

FUTURE PLANS

In terms of hardware expansion, I think my motion system has officially reached its final form. Of course, I say that now, but that could easily change if Qubic releases something even crazier in the future! Right now, my main focus is on logging serious seat time in iRacing to aggressively hone my competitive driving skills.

I am also eager to branch out into combat flight simulators like DCS to see how the rig handles dogfighting, as I’ve only briefly tested it with MSFS 2024 so far. Ultimately, the building phase is over, and my overall plan is to simply immerse myself in the equipment and enjoy the incredible experience it provides.

The entire platform is built like an absolute tank, yet the movements remain incredibly fast, precise, and surprisingly quiet. Driving GT cars around the Nürburgring in iRacing or AC Evo feels remarkably close to reality. The motion cues are simply second to none, translating exactly what the chassis is doing directly to my body. Being able to physically feel the rear end getting light, anticipating the slide, and catching it in real-time is exactly what sim racing dreams are made of.
